Go Up Go Down

i bought a metal detector because my girlfriends dad had a rock that had gold in it. years ago as he was putting in a cement walk way in the front yard the rock was thrown in the ground where the walkway was being poured but im not sure how to find it with my metal detector without destroying the whole walkway.

First off you need to ask was the rock from there or did it come from fill dirt, from some place other than his yard?  Most of the time gold is found where gold has been found before.  Gold , silver, platinum and of course black sand all travel together. Along with iron and any other heavy metal. It is kind of like rock stars and groupies.

First of all, welcome. Second, finding a lost item in concrete is not prospecting. You're going to have a rough time finding it because most concrete is poured over a steel reinforcement. This will mask your rock. If you absolutely KNOW it was gold, it may be worth finding. If you don't know for sure, the speculation might drive you crazy if you think about it too much. You need to decide what to do very soon or give it up.

By the way, I have some gold bearing rock right here on my desk. It contains gold in the form of ore. The entire rock has less than 1 gram in it but it does contain gold. How do you know of that rock is even worth recovering? To repair damage to a sidewalk might cost you more than the ounce of gold you might recover. You have a lot more to consider about the "should I" part before you ask about the "how do I detect it" part.

Your material came from some place else.

Trust me, It was not from the yard.

You need to check out the location of the gret or Gavel yard.

The best way in starting prospecting with a metal detector would be trying it in your back yard under controlled conditions.  This I say is because out in the search area, that you have no idea what is out there you would have thing that you know is around you.  You would need to first, and I am not being an idiot by saying this but.  Read the instruction manual if you have never used on before.   The metal detector is a sensitive device that picks up replies from a sensor sending out a impulse.   You would be best in getting, if you have them some coins, something gold.  Then by playing with the gain, you put them apart from each other and having the coils say 8-12" of the ground.  bring the coil, so it is even with the ground and swing it slowly over each.  This way you will see by the gauge and hear the sound of them when you come close to coming over them.  That way when you are out actually searching an area you will have a rough idea on finding something and finding ghosts.

Wise forget that rock take you detector to where you know gold has been found and look there and take a gold pan with you to do a little testing if there are any streams or creeks around, if not get you some dry samples in a bucket and bring them back to camp or home where you have water and can pan them out good hunting (oh and stay out of old gold mines thay are death trap)
