I KNOW I posted this somewhere before, but it must have gotten "borked" somehow with recent server problems.

i keep seeing posts about new people asking for permission on private property, and this is VERY important.

Hope this helps some of you who hunt yards and parks.

Thanks, Spooky......excellent post.   Remember, folks, respecting public and private property (and teaching other detectorists to do likewise) is one of the things we can all do to make sure our hobby can continue.

I have only been detecting for a year now but the time I spent tearing up my own yard in practice was invaluable to my future relationships with those who have allowed me to hunt in theirs.  After figuring out exactly what to look for and how to pin point targets I can honestly say that my holes are no bigger than the width om my little hand shovel and I don't chase deeper bigger targets because I know that if I don't find it a little deeper thank my detector says it is then it is just a septic tank or some bucket masquerading as a silver dollar. (lol)

Being picky about my targets has served me very well in nice yards and has gotten me a quite a few more of their neighbors invites.  It sure does not hurt when they find out that I actually did pay for half the value of that silver coin that I found.  It is like they are hunting with me when they know that I will give them a five dollar bill bill for a silver quarter and I don't mind one little bit.   Of coarse I won't offer to pay unless I think it will be necc:)

Ohh, one thing that has helped me in the local older public parkls is that I carry a work blade ( Klein) on my belt which is very tough and blunt at the end.  I use it just fine to dig with as well.  It actually works great in gravel and I use it before anything else in rocky ground.

People see you with a little knife and they will not even consider you to be damaging the landscape in the least.  Break out even a small shovel and deal with the cops in about one hour in one of the parks that I have hunted at a few times..

Since this is a tutorial type of thread I will say this since I have never read it anywhere...

I pin point in motion very very accurately by correlating the position of the target with the trailing edge of the inner coil.  As long as the target has a consistent identity and can be pin pointed in motion very tightly I can feel confident that it has a great chance to be a coin or jewelery.

This is an important topic and not to be taken lightly, especially for those who are new to the hobby. Having the right tool for the job is important as well as watching target recovery tutorial videos. Understanding your particular type of metal detector and how it responds is also important.

Back to target recovery... Everyone has their own preferences for which tool/trowel is best and I have found one that works very well for a multitude of digging conditions... I think this is a very much overlooked tool in the metal detecting community, and for a fraction of the cost of namebrand diggers, you can't beat it. A good backup or even primary digging tool, this one goes everywhere with me...

I've done it. Actually you've done an excellent and very very useful job. I don't know about others opinion. But its would be helpful in my practical life.
Anyway thanks for your link...

I was at Wal Mart recently to get a new trowel since I bent up my newly acquired cheapo on it's first outing.  I also got this over sized looking knife with two sharp tips that looked like it could really dig thru gravel.  It also had a serated edge that works great on small roots.  Since I find layers of shell in the ground in my area quite often I tried it out the very next time I hit rock and it was the absolute best tool so far for gravel.

Just a little FYI but if anyone is looking for something to eat up gravel or shells this tool rocks (pun intended!) and is really much tougher than I would have ever thought.  It's two tips have put up with a whole a lot of abuse so far.

I may be different but I cut a V shaped plug. You know like a triangle & leave the top attached as a flap. One cut on the left & one cut one the right. Can't tell you've been digging if done right. Quick & easy. Wise

Good for you    Clapp    That's definitely one of the preferred methods.....that attached top helps prevent the grass from dieing and keeps the plug from getting sucked up when the lawnmower goes bye.
