| You could always use a probe. A brass or metal rod to locate the coin & then pry it up with a screwdriver thru a slit in the grass. No hole to fill in. Easy to make or buy.

ahh.....to live in a place where a probe and a screwdriver are a viable option that would be a dream come true.
Here a jackhammer (or at least a hammer and chisel) is required any time you get outside a manicured park or lawn.
But you are right, the less damage we do to the groundcover the better.....and the probe/screwdriver method is the least damaging method currently available.
So try it first (it takes practice). If that doesn't work then go for the attached plug method......and then if you still can't get the goody because you are way out in the desert where there really isn't any grass anyway, resort to more agressive means--BUT make sure you fill in your holes and erase the evidence that you were there.
