Good for you    Clapp    That's definitely one of the preferred methods.....that attached top helps prevent the grass from dieing and keeps the plug from getting sucked up when the lawnmower goes bye.

I will certainly have to try the triangle idea.  Although I usually leave the hole looking perfect I seem to find that the grass dies the next day.

  Thx

With the V plug 1/3 of the grass roots are still connected. If done right the grass doesn't die.

Good tutorial!  Great  Proper pinpointing with your metal detector via no motion pinpointing mode (not all metal detectors have this option) or from just sweeping the coil back and forth and noting the physical location where the target is in the ground will reduce the need to dig 8" diameter plugs.  With practice you will be able to reduce the size of your plugs.  Good Luck!

You could always use a probe. A brass or metal rod to locate the coin & then pry it up with a screwdriver thru a slit in the grass. No hole to fill in. Easy to make or buy.  Wise

ahh.....to live in a place where a probe and a screwdriver are a viable option that would be a dream come true.   Kiss

Here a jackhammer (or at least a hammer and chisel) is required any time you get outside a manicured park or lawn.

But you are right, the less damage we do to the groundcover the better.....and the probe/screwdriver method is the least damaging method currently available.   Great

So try it first (it takes practice).  If that doesn't work then go for the attached plug method......and then if you still can't get the goody because you are way out in the desert where there really isn't any grass anyway, resort to more agressive means--BUT make sure you fill in your holes and erase the evidence that you were there.

BA

Thank you for this I had had an idea of what plug cutting was and somewhat how to go about it.  Now I know for certain!  Excellent!
