Can you post a photo of the controls?

My guess is they would be Beat Freq and Volume?

Hmmm you should have two knobs one is volume the other is the BFO balance the thing is to turn the knob till the signal is not heard any more do this with the coil near the ground you will have to re-adjust it frequently that is the disadvantage with the BFO so lets re-cap turn the knob till no audio is herd then turn back very slowly the finer the adjustment the greater the depth of detection will be. Have fun.

Sorry to say it but Bio Frequency Ocillaters are pretty much Junk, you will dig EVERYTHING metal, poor depth and they are very unstable, you will be adjusting the tuning ALL the time Cry

Good thing Seldom is off doing some important research, otherwise he just might have to dispute you when it comes to Beat Frequency Oscillator detectors.   The man loves his.   But of course, a lot of that has to do what he hunts, where he hunts and how long he has been hunting with it (and yes he does have other detectors).

All that being said, BFO is definitely OLD school technology.   And you WILL dig up everything until you learn to recognize the specific signals...which is where test gardens come in to the mix.

Think of this as a starter machine until you can move into something else.

BA

I agree with you BA, do the best with what you have and upgrade when you can, don't let old technology discourage you in your new hobby

Hi MM,

I just sent a post to another member about getting copies of old manuals from

www.brokendetectors.com
.  Check out his website.  I still have the orginial metal detector I bought from the old "The Association" (some of you old-timers might remember it!) and it was a simple little BFO unit.  I found a lot of good things with it over the years, and tons of junk.  But...  it got me into this hobby and I was very happy with it in the early 1970's!  Good Luck.

LOL!  I think that one was my first detector.

Mine was called the Crusader?  I even got a flier type news letter about once a month for a year with it.

Peace of junk BFO .  Had to Retune it every 10 steps.

No One can convince me that it didn't work because I found a 1952 Silver Quarter the first ten minutes I fired it up.  LOL

It had a whole six transistor and was tuned with a 300uf cap like used on a radio.

It ran at 360kc.  Yep Kc!    Old School for 360 Khz!

Yep!  Early 70's out of the back of a Treasure Rag Mag.

haha,
I remember doing about the same, got an old unit used from a dude that ordered it right out of the old late 70's magazine ad, and then I got stuck with his fabulous unit. lol

I actually think I sold that old thing at a garage sale we had for like $20.00 back in the day!  Not a bad return considering..

Constant sounds and digging the whole front yard up, my Mom had a fit & my dad, well I wont go there...The thing seemed to find alot of Aluminum nails though.  Sad

Good reading here Homie, appreciated it and got a good chuckle man- LMAO..  Grin

Yep, it was the Crusader!

It worked for me, too.  The first find with it was 1898 Indian Head penny (found by my wife in our front yard, because she insisted on using it before I did!)

The next find was a 1939 Lincoln wheatie in the parking strip in front of our house.  And it went on from there!

You are sure right about having to retune it every 10 steps, too!  I still have the old thing stuck away somewhere in my garage.

Good Times!  LOL
