There's something else, actually, that has put me off being a full time treasure hunter and that is the fact that it's a fun thing to do now. I'm afraid if I ever went at it so hard that my life and livelihood depended on success, I would not enjoy it at all.

You really should use this as a relaxing hobby for now. Plan your life well, financially, and when you can quit the rat race, do it because you can, not because you must.

One last thing. Don't forget to buy lottery tickets. You need to have at least one to win. Just one. The right one.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I doubt many make a living from this, but I am sure some supplement their income in this way. We have a beach/sea hunter in our area that detects in the beach as a second job. One other fellow who is often at the beach, when my friends and I hunt, seems to make it without other work, but judging by his appearance it has to be a meager living at best.

So I have to ask, how good do want to live?

For me, when I am detecting, there is nothing else on my mind, it is an escape from the daily grind.

Yes I to don't think you could make a living at detecting. You can sublet your income. But I think we all dream of a life like Mel Fisher and find Spanish gold,or the fella in England that went looking for his hammer a ended up finding those coins. To me  I just plain enjoy it.Its the only hobby I know that pays you back for your effort, and hey who knows maybe 300 years ago some bank robber or rich land owner buried a box of 4000 gold coins in the very spot you are going detecting tomorrow and you get a real good tone.   Cheers   Kevin

Making a living from metal detecting is possible but not probable. I know a few people in Europe that are able to make enough money to keep themselves out of the "office". But then, they live in a country with thousand of years of history, lots of open land, and a much lower cost of living than we have in the US, and a LOT LESS guys using metal detectors. Many of their finds are ancient and often pretty valuables. Making a living from this in the US in not likely, but at least possible. Don't loose the faith or forget the dream !

Just a hobby, just a hobby !

Though like buying a ticket in the lottery, you could win a prize.
