I as always suggest the Garrett 250 but if you do a search [top right of page] you will find lots of info and suggestions
Try " best beginner detector"

In the United States, at least, any short list of general purpose machines that are beginner friendly should include the Garrett 250 that seldom mentions, a Tesoro Compadre or Silver uMax, a Teknetics Delta, a White's Coinmaster or Prizm and a Fisher F2 or F4.  There maybe other detectors that are comparable in England that are not available in the United States.    Definitely follow seldom's suggestion to do the search for "best beginner detector".  Not only will that let you see what others have written previously, but it will also help you decide what features are important to you and your grandson.

BA gave you a pretty good list..
I know the Ace 250 and the Tesoro Umax are pretty popular in the UK...
And both will serve you well.
My PERSONAL new favorite beginner detector MAY not be available in the UK yet. (The Coinmaster)

You could try the Minelab X-terra series, they range from $300-700USD new, or used for less money. Minelab offers a short shaft so that you and your grandson could use the same machine.

The Whites coinmaster and coinmaster pro look good for the price, although I have never tried one....

White's

My first was a White's. I got it off Ebay for a start. I was thinking if I find enough stuff to sell, I can afford a new one. I'm still asking around for suggestions myself Smiley
The reason why I went with White's is because they have a vibrating device attaches to the headset. Since I'm deaf, it helps me know when there is a find!

There are a lot of good choices out there. I can only speak for the ACE 250. Great little detector! You can't go wrong with it.

I have both the ACE 250 and the ACE 150. Actually both machines work just as well except the 150 has no pinpoint mode and without it the novice will find himself digging huge holes and pawing through the dirt. I would go with the 250 the pinpoint function alone is worth the extra 50 bucks.
