Hi,I live in New Mexico and Im new to treasure hunting. I wanted to know some of the legalities of metal detecting.

Is it legal to detect on state parks? National parks? BLM land? off the side of the road?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marshal

Hello . City or local parks are o.k to metal detect unless posted by a sign .
State parks require a permit if it is allowed .
National Parks are usually a big NO . Contact the Federal Park office or Rangers station in that State .
BLM land should be contacted just to be safe . Laws vary a little by location .

Down here In Deming New Mexico, there is the thing.

State Parks are all under the same umbrella. No, No, No, and No again.

But, if you ask you may get the Ok in certain areas.

BLM:  Good to Go!  Just fill all holes or they get PP hearted.

Forest:  You can detect but can not Dig!

These folks are REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT the antiques laws.  There have been people ticked for possessing square nails over 50 years old!  LOL!!

Surface finds on Indian stuff is good to go no matter what they tell you as long as your not within a Archaeological area..
