Did you check The Brick and Rock for a signal?

Both can be hot.

I spent 20 minutes one day sifting dirt and rocks looking for a signal only to find a regular looking river rock was the source.

I did bring it home but haven't crushed it, you think there might be a nugget in there? I figured it would be copper ore or something like that.

There is still a lot of non destructive testing you can do first. See if you can find a ceramic flat known as a streak plate. If you can't find one, go to Home Depot and get a piece of tile that has a smooth, flat back to it. That will do in a pinch. Then look up mineral streak plate on Google and see what the basic rock consists of before you try to crush it. If it is what I think it is, you won't need to crack it open to figure out why it reacted.

If not, look into running a specific gravity test. That requires a acouple of glasses and a hanging postage scale. See the attached image. Again, Google is your friend. You first weight your object in air and then in water to get specific gravity. If you know the basic rock makeup (from the streak test) then you can confirm if there is something inside by the SG test. If so, you can do one more thiing before you crack it open.

Have an x-ray on the rock. You can find non-destructive testing in the Yellow Pages. If not, look for a forklift company and call them to ask where their machines are tested. They are required by federal law to have periodic testing. Also, airplanes need it. I've had my coils done for a couple of dollars each.

If you share your results here, someone can surely give you a good guess.

Wow GD that seems pretty involved Smiley I guess I should describe it a bit better, It is about 1 1/2" in diameter, light green in color and pretty soft in consistency, I was able to flake a chunk off with a nail. I thought it was probably copper ore as there is an exposed ore body about 20 miles up the river that has similar color and density. It came in in the zinc penny range on my machine, as an anomaly I picked it up and brought it home for further study but had forgotten about it until I was reading this thread. I should also say sorry to the OP for hijacking your thread, but probably good info at any rate.

GD is there a specific reason for non destructive testing? seems it would be simpler to whack it with the sledge and see whats inside.
What am I missing here?

If you have a collectible ore sample, non destructive testing will allow it to retain its value. Gold ore in quartz, for example, is far more valuable than if you crush it and melt the gold.

Staples and Office Depot have them for under $3.00 last time I looked.
