Wow. Talk about diverse questions here in the same topic. The answer to both is to study your detector or your choice of detector by reading the instruction manuals. You can experiment and even take someone else's advice and there's no guarantee that it will result in a better function.
Your depth is not dependent on your detector alone. Other factors outside of your machine will affect it and the more you learn about how your machine works, the better you will be. It will also inform you of your choice before you purchase it.
