The only answer from me will be what can you afford or what do you have or want to do.I have a friend who has an old garret 300 Ya they don't even make them any more. But he still uses it! He wants a Minelab for gold prospecting but they cost to much so he has his eye on the fisher gold bug pro.
Now for coin shooting the garret Ace 250 gets some of the best revues for it's price range, the coin master is in there also. I personally use the Fisher F5 and am happy, although it has a slight learning curve for a new B like me, it aint that bad I have fun!
Now there is an old guy that I talk with who owns a landscaping lot who also sell sells Tesoro's and he swears by his Tesoro Silver He has showed me some of his finds and even though there are better up grades of that brand, this is all he will use because he knows it so well!! Plus they have a lifetime warranty!!
From my readings Bounty hunter is one of easiest to pick up and go and Minelab on the harder side to learn to read.
Im starting to learn that it's not about whats the best and definitely not the cheapest, but something in between that you can spend some time with that will make a hunt fun   Smiley

One option I am finding helpful is on KellyCo's site.

(This is the spectra I am looking at buying.)

Just under the picture is a button "Click to Compare this Detector". Click on it and add any other detector you are considering.

In my case weight is a factor (I don't like the heavier machines) as well as length of rod (Wife says I am a short Sh*t).

No help here on how good the machine is with finding coins, but lots of help in comparing capabilites, especially when comparing two machines in the same general price range.

Add this to reviews of the different machines on sites and boards such as this, and you get a good idea of what you are getting in a machine.

Is there a detector that can detect crystals and different mineral types, and if so what is the price range on that, thanks Smiley

Well that is a mouthful. I'm too new to answer that.

Most detectors are ground balanced which means they null the mineralization in the ground. You still pick up heavy minerals, but some machines automatically adjust, and others ignore it.

Think or the coil, and the signal it puts out. What does a detector really do? It slightly charges metals in the ground and the coil picks up on that, having to do with the magnetic field of the earth.

Ok, somebody fix this broken horse as I cant explain it better than that?

   In a word -- "NO".
Metal detectors detect metal.   If a metal detector detects gold, it doesn't care whether it is crystalline or not and it isn't going to tell you what the molecular structure of the gold is.
There is nothing similar to a metal detector that locates unseen crystals (well, not practically anyway since I suppose you could lug around a big x-ray machine or something similar).  There are some VERY expensive handheld spectro analysis devices that will tell you the ratio of various elements in an ore sample, but by the time you are close enough to use the thing, you're also close enough to see with your own eyes whether there are crystals are not.  (and the thing doesn't tell you how the molecules are arranged---only which elements are present and in what ratio).

V3 & Excalibur II
« Reply #19 on: February 22, 2011, 03:10:46 pm »
Go Up Go Down

I cut my teeth on a Xterra 705.  Now I use a Whites V3 and an Excalibur II.  I read and learned all the basics of the 705 while detecting as much as possible.  When I transitioned to the V3, it was a matter of adding knowledge to the basics and the transition was much smoother.  I researched topics to death.  The skills you learn while practicing and listening to what the detector is telling you is invaluable.  The best detector is the one you use and understand what its doing.

I have been out hunted by guys with lower end detectors when I started since they fully understood their machine and knew the tricks in determining if a target was worth digging.
