Go Up Go Down

Hi there,
I expect this is a very poor question without a clear "what is it you're trying to find" answer but I'm thinking about building a Pulse Induction Metal Detector.  Any suggestions for a fellow with moderately good electronic construction skills?
Thanks guys,
Doug

pi is of course all metal by its very nature with "0" disc ability -- so be prepared to dig a lot --but the good news is they run deep and you will not miss any thing within its range   its both a upside / downside issue)  Detecting

now you left out several vital bits of info --in your question "which is best?"

#1 what price range ? -- which detector is best -- sky is the limit or which is best for say $400 -- big differance

#2 where will you be hunting ?--- nice mild soil or really nasty heavily mineral infested places -- in mild soils cheaper preset type units are ok but in bad soil -- a  manual adjustible balance is a must -- however those units tend to cost more $$$

#3 --how good are you tech wize ?--- some folks like "beep /dig " simple machines ---while  others like the more complex machines where do you fall in at?

#4 are you a "dig it all for fear of missing a good item" --( thus a PI or all metals mode type hunter---or are you a "cherry picker" type fellow --willing to maybe give up a few items to be able to use disc and cover more ground rapidly ?

If you are thinking about building a detector (PI or other type) I suggest you take a look at the Metal Detectors board in our Tech Talk section.   That's where you'll find a technical discussion of the plans available and also have an opportunity to judge whether it really is something you want to tackle for yourself.

(Seldom and I leave the detector building to those who have mastered the art of shoelace tieing )

I'm a beginner, and thinking of purchasing a Fisher 1212 x. I've read many reviews, and it seems to be a very good unit to start with.

I also like the entry level price.

Anyone recommend another, or is this a good starting detector?

One more question...

Can anyone recommend a good set of headphones that is reasonably priced?

Thanks,

I USE A TESORO TEJON, BUT I MAINLY RELIC HUNT.  THE TEJON IS A VERY DEEP MACHINE AND EASY TO USE, IT IS ALSO LIGHT AND VERY QUICK CIRCUITRY.  THE TESORO MODELS ALL COME WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY, AND THEY ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO TALK TO YOU AND HELP YOU, AND IF THAT DOESN'T WORK THEN SEND THE MACHINE IN AND THEY WILL FIX IT OR TUNE IT UP FOR YOU.

I researched for months before buying my latest metal detector Garretts underwater model.

I purchased it for the specific intent of finding metal in or near the water.

Decide what you want to do with the detector first... Then research, read reviews on numerous sites and then go for it.

I am also looking for a good entry level detector, I will probably end up buying three. Two for myself and one for my friend. My friend just needs a cheap one. Does anybody know of good cheap one?

LOL! GOOD Cheap One.

My son has a Microtana 4006 Radio Shack peace of junk.

It's Good Because it cost nothing and it finds stuff.

It was given to him because the owner did not know how to set it up.

It will find a Dime at a honest 5".

Gold Nuggets, I don't think so.  LOL! It may, if he puts it over a good one.!

Is it a Toy?   Yep, but a Good Toy.

I my self don't cotton to being told when and what to dig.

Old School, I like hearing the single tone and making that choice my self.

Metal detectors are sorta like Candy.   Do you like it or Not.

New Fangled detectors PRETEND TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY SEE!

LOL! You use that machine and I will find the Gold Rings that confused the COMPUTER that told you it was a Pull Tab.

Time for my Cup of Tea and a Nap!

Talk to me later.

LOL!
