I've known some toilet paper in some parts of the "civilized" world that would make fresh corn cobs feel almost like Charmin

Hey, I used corn cobs as a kid.  The trick is to don't let them dry out.  Keep 'em soaking in a bucket of water right inside the privy door.  They're a lot more comfortable than the Sears and Roebuck catalogue, and more efficient too.  One corn cob will take care of your business, but it might take ten pages of the catalogue  Wink

And no, I'm not talking about soaking them between uses.  We were civilized enough to consider them single use only, even if we were hillbillies.

Well come on TJ, think about the difference between a nicely soaked corn cob and a leaf.  Corn cobs have all those grooves and channels in them that just scrape it all clean.  You don't shove it in, you just drag it along.  Preferably front to back instead of back to front so you don't hit the dangly's with it. Wink  You could spend all day out there with leaves in what would take you five seconds with a cob.  LOL.

Growing up on the farm we'd grow about 400 acres of corn that'd go in the corn bin to dry in the husk.  When time came to feed the pigs and cows, you'd strip cobs, and it'd literally take only a few seconds.  By the time you got to stripping the corn, it'd be like the consistency of popcorn, and just falls out of the cob, and then what are you going to do with the cob?

Those cobs were fine for hygiene... as long as they were soaked in water.  If you used one dry it was like using a wood rasp on your nether regions.  The only reason we kept the Sears & Roebuck catalog in the outhouse was for reading and those cold winter nights when the bucket full of corn cobs froze solid.

another advantage of using soaked corn cobs instead of leaves.......I'm definitely with bigwater on this (inluding preferring the corn cob to the slick pages of the Sears Catalog.....the regular newsprint pages aren't as bad, but who wants all that ink there?)

I don't know about you all, but thanks for whoever invented the poo poo paper! I couldnt stand the cob, it's hard just poopin kernals. And as far as the news paper,  I don't want to imagine Charlie Brown tattooed to my backside from the sunday funnys! I will never complain when I walk into a store restroom and using the the cheep toilet paper they have on the roll because I'll always remember that I could have been using a corn cob!"All of us today are just a bunch of pamppered a-holes!" Grin Great

Hey, EW, you and I  live in a land where even the "cheep toilet paper" is is a luxury (at least compared to what I was using in Europe in the mid-70's (hopefully the toilet paper situation has improved there)).  All in all, it's a wonderful country.
