I've heard of people putting money in bird houses. Now these bird houses from long ago would be gone, but if you have old photographs of the place you're hunting, and there's a bird house there, it might be worth scanning the ground where it once stood.

Worked with a friend that was a biker and he had hid 6000$ in money in his front yard in a plastic pipe and forgot where so I loaned him a detector to get it out.   A friend of mine in way up north helped some friends find  140,000$  buried in a plastic pipe in a barn yard that they had saved for their family for hard times.  shortribs.
