Interesting topic here, I came very close to getting jumped in Golden Gate Park I was lucky, I won't go there again alone.
My biggest problem has been dogs and their owner's some just don't have control, they let their dogs run free unleashed
in parks that clearly NO DOGS ALLOWED . Don't get me wrong I love all animals I just don't want to get bit I've been scared
an easy half dozen times where I had to calm these dogs down.
Any advice welcomed big time.

Unleashed dogs have come to me many times, I have also gotten scared by them because you never know. However, all dogs so far have shown a rather friendly approach. The problem about detecting alone, which most of us do, is that you are so focused on what you are doing that it is very easy to lose track of your surroundings. I have been surprised several times by curious people that I did not realize were next to me observing what I was doing. If you use headphones you may not listen someone approaching you. We do get noticed by people. They don't happen to see someone metal detecting everyday so they will note you.

Neighbors living in proximity to a park have called the police on me too. The last time I detected I saw a squad with two cops observing me for about 10 minutes. They did not approach me, but you could feel the pressure.  Police

Might sound a bit drastic, but have you considered pepper spray?

You never know , one day you might not be able to calm one of those dogs...

Dont get me wrong im an animal lover, where i detect the biggest problem are wild pigs

cheers  steve

I once had a little dog come up to me with a ball wanting to play fetch. Threw it a few times until the owner came over and apologized. I find dogs are just as curious as people. Now if we could train them to help us dig. Grin

Yes, definitely pepper spray is something we should consider carrying for personal safety emergencies. This opens a whole new topic about safety issues and tips when detecting. My best advice however is to hunt with a buddy rather than alone, especially in unknown sites.

There are far too many laws governing dogs. They need places to stretch out and have a run. If you don't like seeing a dog off the leash, you should go where there isn't a dog.

That's my point. The sign should never even exist. Why is it that the responsibility for dog owners with bad dogs always falls on the shoulders of those who have good dogs? If you have laws that punish owners with bad dogs, that should be quite enough.

What's ridiculous is the unnecessary laws we have to put up with. I take my dog everywhere. He's a fine companion and does not trouble anyone on this planet. He is never on a leash unless I deem it appropriate.

Hell, I still can't figure out what a Dog License entitles a dog to do.   LOL!

I like dogs and owned one, but I respectfully disagree! Consider that dogs are not all friendly and/or trained so as to run free where people gather for recreation. In Chicago, and pretty sure in many cities in the US, dogs must be on-leash in public places, unless otherwise stated. There are nine dogs-friendly parks in Chicago (including a beach), but owners must obtain a permit to let their dogs off-leash in the designated areas within these parks. They are also responsible for making sure their dogs are vaccinated against contagious diseases. Hefty fines for the owner if walking a dog off-leash, let alone law suits if it bites someone or even another dog. Some parks have enclosures for dogs wherein they can stretch and run and also play with other dogs. Public parks are designed for people's recreational needs, including metal detecting, so I don't see a reason to refrain myself from doing so in parks just because dog owners decide to let their dogs run free illegaly. If not, where am I going to find my clad?  Grin
