Well light travels faster in water and that is a frequency too.

It's a know fact that light travels slower in a Magnetic surrounding.  Matter does slow down Photons.  In order for them to go place to place they need to go around (Magnetic or Gravitational objects)  In order to go through some thing they have to to be stopped, Repeated by some other element causing another Photon to be Emitted.  Laser works that way.

There is a Argument of weather Light is a Wave or Particle. It seems it has both Properties.  Called a Wavical. Passes both test. Emmm.  Guess were not as smart as we think."?

Radio waves are not faster in water, only audio. You can slow down a radio wave but not in reality. A delay line, for example, slows it down by making it travel a distance inside of a transmission line. Not really slowed, just delayed. Light and radio waves travel at nearly the same speeds. For our purposes, that's instantaneous. Calculating the time of a radio wave return would not be something I would want to tackle.

All that being as it may, remember we are talking about a magnetic field here and the decay of that field. Both of those can be affected by mineralization. Water in the ground helps to keep the field strong by allowing it a magnetically conductive path. That field energizes the metal objects below our coils and depending on the metal type, sets up eddy currents either on the surface or internally, or both. The receiver is then tuned during the design process to measure the decay based on an image in a known spot on the receiver coil. Normally that is dead center on the coil. Both the echo return of the field and the strength are measured and used for determining a target. Not WHAT it is, just a target by its location.

Later, in the case of discriminating detectors, the return signal is then analyzed to see if it matches a known table of return types. If it matches closely to a nail, your machine says it is a nail. However, that only means it is MOST LIKELY a nail. Not 100%, just a best guess. Which is why most of us dig everything even though we like to look and see what our machine THINKS it is.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Seee?   Were all going to Die. It just takes time to bend around the Light of Time.    Shocked   Or something like that?   If you could bend time via light you may not die because you can shit today and it will show up yesterday.   Shocked

Yes I was wrong  Huh? thought about it and realized that in fact frequency travels very well in space, unlike sound.

So they are not a Simple matter of 2 Radios, One Sending and one Receiving , It is more like us we Shout in A Canyon and wait for the Echo, Only the PI is doing this from 700 to many 000s times A Second,

I recon there both like RADAR  !   PI like the Echo Location Type .     VLF  the Continuous Back Scatter Phase Sensing Type.      Grin    Cool

With better timing circuits, you may be able to determine  exact depth with a PI and Direction of motion with the VLF   Shocked
