Hi,
Sad.... someone needs to reply to this article in no uncertain terms.
What this "editor" fails to understand is that there is a pretty good relationship (over here at least) with detectorists and the newer breed of "arkies".
Most digs will involve detectors and earth resistivity logging, gpr etc.
It seems the the only objectionists are the older, dying out, breed of "arkies".
Many of the hoards found in the u.k., including the Staffordshire, would have, in time, been completely obliterated by the plough.
Our law is, in the main, pretty good.
The finder and landowner get the proper reward, (just as the professional "arkie" get his/her reward through their salary).
The real culprits in this are EBAY!
They really ought to be clamping down hard on the sale of antiquities, and not allow the sale of anything that doesn't have the proper provenance!
We have a minor problem over here with "Nighthawks" - thieves who go out at night armed with detectors and raid "known" and protected sites.
A lot of the stuff they find ends up on Ebay and the like...
