I don't get it either. So many things will be lost to all. Makes no sense to me!

It's a matter of the archaeologists wanting to keep it all for themselves. See if your state allows you to register as an amateur archaeologist.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Everything that is in the box was collected legally.
Private property rights are protected here in Texas but
eminent domain laws can eliminate you rights in a heartbeat.
Texas legislature is working on some of the particulars to change
it and give back some of the rights, that the state has
taken from us!

Out4Gold the state of Texas is working on a law were fossil collectors will have to register and get a 10 dollar permit to hunt fossils them report their finds a lot like the laws in Fl. There is a beachcomber club here on the island who are fighting it.{shark tooth hunters they a weird bunch anyway} There is also a law that the state used on us back in the 70's at Padre Island that anything of value from the high tide mark out to the three mile limit belongs to the state school free lunch program. If the state ever started enforcing this MD on the Texas beachs will be over.

I never thought of that one, register as an amateur archaeologist. That would stymie the local Barney Fife's of the law also. They wouldn't know how to react when you pulled out your archaeologist registration. Thanks for the idea, it's a good one.

Thank you for the info, this is just what I was referring to.
I was aware of the Padre Island thing and have little interest
in hunting there. There are other areas of Texas that are far
more interesting to me.

You have elaborated on the subject a little more than I did.
We need to get together sometime in the future.
I have seen your posts on other sites and you seem to
be a well informed individual.

The fee you speak of is irrevelent but the reporting may be a little difficult. The values of each specimen is a topic of question because some may find some specimens of great value and some may not see them as valuable at all. Also some of the collectors I have met do not have any idea as to what if any value the specimens they have found are worth.
You need to go to a fossil show sometime and get a real feel as to what these people do and see in their collecting.

I would like to disscuss this on a more personal level with you sometime. PM me with a phone # and I'll call you sometime soon.

Later,
Out4gold

To register as an amateur archaeologist. or as a amateur fossil collector puts you on a list some were. One of the most important things to me and others is to stay under the radar. I have heard stories no facts just stories of fossil collectors in Fl. having their finds confiscated for study and never returned. I am not saying do anything illegal just don't advertise what your doing.
Out 4 Gold will pm you my number in a few days would be happy to talk to you.
I don't want this thread to turn into a bash the government thing OK
