makes my collection look really sad.   How much time do you typically spend prepping your pieces for display?

It may take anywhere from several weeks to prep, to matrix free specimens.
I do not remember finding my first fossil nor my first arrowhead.
Yes, I have an arrowhead collection too.

When I was in school my teachers "at least some of them"
could not wait for me to show them what I had found over the weekend. Shocked
I've been doing it all my 58 years. Wise

I have been using a metal detector since 1965 when my dad came home with a D-Tex coin shooter.
He soon upgraded to a golden model.
I still have the Golden model and it still works! Detecting

BTW: I have sold more fossils than I could possibly carry.
I have sold fossils to people all over the world including Russia,Japan,France,Britain,Austrailia........

Just be very careful who you sell them to. There have been some real horror stories about government crackdowns on collectors. Here in Florida you are not allowed to dig or possess sharks teeth, arrowheads, etc. that you dug up. I know it sucks, just letting you know.

Can't keep sharks teeth you dug in Florida is definitely news to me----especially since they are specifically exempted from the list of types of fossils that you need a permit to collect.

.... Regarding the collection/possession of arrowheads it does seem that wholesaler57 may be correct.

I just read in the paper about a year ago where they confiscated a guys collection of approximately $50,000 dollars worth of points, "prehistoric" sharks teeth and miscellaneous artifacts. I also have a friend who was arrested several years ago for digging up the same kind of stuff. I haven't personally checked the law. I do know that you have to be careful. There is also the "Archaeological  Resources Protection Act"  which states that you can't take anything out of the ground more than 50 years old, I believe. That;s a national law. I am not trying to be negative on the subject, just trying to tell him to be careful. There are some horror stories on this site about people who have been arrested for possessing some of this stuff. I think it sucks to. Just letting you know where I'm coming from.
As a correction to my previous post, I believe that the Archaeological Resources Protection Act applies only to Public and Indian lands which translates to Government land an specified Indian land. It should not apply to private property as I understand it.

No problem....it's always better safe than sorry.   And you're right about ARPA.
But don't get me started on that.  Where they came up with the 50 year rule is beyond me.   When I was young things had to be at least 100 years old to be considered antiques in the United States.  The last 100 years in the United States is probably the best and most documented period of time any where at any time in the history of the world.   We've got written records, paintings, photographs, movies, and even voice records of EVERY thing no matter how trivial it is.......so don't tell me we have to be worry about future generations not being able to understand what life was like in the United States because I dig up a coin (or anything else for that matter) that was made less than 5 years after I was born.

Yeah, it seems that we are always willing to let somebody tear up 40 acres to build a strip mall over, it but don't take ten cents from the ground because it has to stay there to preserve history. What good is anything when it's buried underground anyway?

I don't get it either. So many things will be lost to all. Makes no sense to me!
