Well, had an expert take a look at it.   As expected, it was a meteor-wrong.   Out4gold (and my best judgement as opposed to my wishful thinking) is right about it being slag.    Given the fact that it is a long way from the nearest railroad (existing or historic), someone probably hauled it in when they scooped up some coal either from the railroad tracks or from the nearest coal dump.

It's a rock on the ground, it's a specimen when you take it home.

I'm not a know it all, but I try real hard.
I now live near a rail road and have most of my life.
Track runs a mear 35 yards from where I was born and raised.
Used to use the slag stuff as throwing rocks, just a little heavier than
most of the other stuff laying around.
Easy to pick it out from the other materials laying around it got rusty.
BTW: Ridge Runner........The slag size really depended on how often they actually cleaned out the burners. Some could not be just pulled out they had to break them up.
My Grandfather worked with the Southern Pacific Rail road for 30 years, Brakeman.
He told us kids a lot of stories about the Great Depression and the rail road. Wise

well thanks for clearing that up, one thing they are good for is checking out the ground Balance
I use them to check the speed of my machines as they read about 78 to 83 on my machines
depending which rock I use, so they do have their use's
