Does anyone watch the show meteorite men on the science channel? On a couple of eppisodes they use a very large home made coil on a skid made of pvc pipe that they pull behind a vehicle.  I am wondering if anyone has any info on how to build a coil like this.  I know how to build a skid, I just want ot know about the coil and the machein attached to it.

and then once you've made it through that thread you'll probably have a lot of questions some of which may already be answered in Tech Talk/Metal Detectors or Tech Talk/Modifications, Do It Yourself & Repairs.   If not, those folks that frequent those boards should be able to answer your specific questions.

I'm not a technical guy, so I'm going to get out of my depth before too long on this, but I can give you some basic info that you can then use to properly phrase your technical questions on the Do It Yourself board.

First, you're going to need to decide if you are going to use an existing detector and just build a new, larger coil for it or if you are going to build the whole thing from scratch including the brains of the detector.

If you're going to go the first route, you will want to include the following information in your post:
Type of metal detector (BFO, VLF, or PI)
Make and Model (Fisher F75, Garrett Ace 25, etc)
Frequency the detector operates at
Size of coil and/or the depth you'd like to reasonably achieve
Your technical background (i.e. did you ever make a crystal radio, since coil making is going to involve wrapping wires much like you did with the crystal radio coil)

If you're building from scratch, you can leave out the Make and Model and leave open the Frequency.

In the meantime to give you a general idea about coil making you might want to look at these earlier postings

BA, this is very good advice and spot-on. From Franklin's question, he knows how to build the plastic bit and needs help with the electronics box and the coil itself. A tall order since something like that would have to be either a stolen design from an existing manufacturer or a new design from someone here.

He wants to find meteorites so his best option is a PI detector. A BFO won't have enough power and a VLF/TR would be less efficient. The PI almost screams to be the design. Can't you hear it?

This question is way beyond the scope of most of the experts here who really don't have time to design something for someone else when the interest originates from a single individual. Even if there were a group of folks here clamoring for it, I'd give this project a wide berth.

Thanks BA and gold digger for all the advice and links and help. I have no electronics background and this is way out of my league Cry but I figured if you're going to go for it, go all out. I am in no hurry and eventually I will figure it out, I never give up. I am happy to report that I got my first detector yesterday. Treasure Hunter XJ9-3050 Deep Search Grin I had a whites years ago that a friend gave me but it was stolen from me before I really learned to use it Cry.  I will post a report on the detector after some field time. Thanks again. Smiley

I've never seen the show, however I've been thinking about tying to build one for about a year. Now seems like a better time than never. I've been impressed with amount of info on these boards! The best by far to what I've seen! Hope we all can figure it out!
