Here's one of my finds from summertime, a Placenticeras Interclare Ammonite from the Bearpaw formation in southern Alberta, Canada. This measures 7" across and I just finished trading it for a bunch of Megs and sharks teeth. Ammolite is a precious gem only found on fossils from the Bearpaw formation. It is rarer than diamonds! It's a fossil Ammonite and it's covered with Ammolite which is made of Aragonite which is a mineral consisting of calcium carbonate. The Ammolite only appears in southern Alberta, a result of being buried in volcanic ash. Smiley
You are right momo, thank you! Hello

Cephlapod.
The ammonite you have posted is not only found in the bearpaw of Alberta but can also be found in the Dakotas as well. Same formation but it seems the specimens found farther north have more of the ammolite preserved than the US side of the border. Also the colors are more vivid in most specimens.
The Nautilus specimens have a thicker shell and if you find one of them then you can scream JACKPOT!
Even the pieces of the ammolite have value, hope you don't pass them up...... I have seen jewelry made from them and they sell well at the fossil shows.
You have a very good specimen there don't give away your location if you value finding any more.
BTW: If you traded it away, show what you got in return.......
I'd like to know if you got a bargain, or did the other guy?

A "rock" on the ground is a "specimen",
when you pick it up and take it home.

I keep all the ammolite I find, here's some of the cabs I use to make jewelry and one of my pendents.
I'd like to show you what I traded for but I've traded those for other goodies already. The value of the teeth was about $5000. I'm happy with the trade since I have other Ammonite Ammolites to console myself with! Smiley

Pretty stuff! You ever do any wire wrapping? looks like those cabs would work well for that.

Hey Figgy,

It all looks good to me.  Not only do you know how to find the good stuff, you also seem to be pretty good at maximizing its value.
