Hi all!

Just to share my experience having been in Utah mid-September.  Tried Topaz Mountain and Thomas range for trilobites and anything else gemmy to no avail.  Going to the opal mines in northwest Nevada was too far to drive this trip around.  Did find some red jasper along the roadways but you may be better off going to a rock shop.

A nice trip, if you get the opportunity, is the Herkimer Diamond and Ace of Diamond Mines in Herkimer, NY area in October.  You are actually digging in a quarry-type setting with some nice finds with a little perseverance.  Just make sure you wear and carry the right gear.  Equipment can be rented but depending on # of people digging, you may be better off bringing your own.  Foliage is in its prime!  Some nice speciman found with digging.

Glad to hear  you made it back OK.... sorry to hear about limited finds.

I  like to go, without expectations, then I can be pleasantly surprised, when I do find something.... at least you got to go! I had other things to occupy my time, t5his summer, oh well, next year now.....

Yes, I have it all planned! Whether I can get free, or not,  we shall see.

Some great stuff out in that desert, but there is a lot more of nothing out there too  Grin sorry you didn't find much.

I had great plans for a big trip this year but it didn't pan out. Ended up making a little find literally in my back yard. Didn't get rich but had some fun!

Gemstone hunting would be so cool--that is if you could find some really nice pieces---better luck next time... Great

Sounds cool-nothing like finding something neat practically in your yard!

I actually did go to NC to the franklin area (late may and early june) and literally dug in quarries, did some sleucing if rivers didn't permit digging.  I hit about 8 mines in a week, very tiring but fun, found some FANTASTIC gems in the rough.  Went with no expectations just hopes and had a grand time.

See, this is where I think we all need to share where we've been (and what areas are good for) finding stuff.
There is a book about "fee-mining" in different areas.  The prices listed for entry/digging fees were a bit outdated- but they gave some insight as to what to expect and what options were available.

Well if you happen to be out west here there is a good site at Lime Oregon which is on hwy84 between Ontario and Baker. I got some stuff from there a few years back. There is an ancient riverbed on the sight which was yeilding some good gold. The GPAA owns it now so you have to be a member to get in I guess.

When I get to the home pc I'll post some Silver City pictures of my last trip

A view from the top of the Owyhees near Silver City. It rained, hailed, snowed and shown sunny that day! Good ol Idaho weather. Gold, Silver, and Cinnabar there as well as crystals and such.

Some obsidian from Glass Mountain in Oregon, sheen, rainbow, ribbon, and brown. Used to do a little flint knapping back in the day. These were gathered in the late 70s and it was everywhere, last time I was there in the 90s it was a little more picked over.

Some thundereggs from the Lucky Strike Thunderegg mine in the Ochaco forest central Oregon. Also gathered in the 70s although I believe its still as plentiful today.

Nice!!  Not sure what thundereggs are- just look like a bunch of fallen rock.  But thanks so much for posting the pix, really appreciate it!!  I ended up crossing over Wyoming into Colorado for an overnite trip and not sure what I'd be looking for.  Next time I get in that area, I'll try to make it a point to venture to that area.
Does anyone know of anything in PA/NJ area?  I've heard of some possibilities around the Wilkes-Barre area and Williamsport (PA) plus somewhere in the northern part of NJ, but don't know where.
