You may want to research the "Camino Real" this trail was started in ancient times by the Native peoples and took in by the Spanish who gave it it's name.
It does pass near or through the Aransas Co. area.
Some of the earliest settlements were established along it's treks.
Just a small suggestion as to something else that will plague your outings.
Lot's of useless leads but some worthwhile to investigate.
