Adrian - I don't think they are judging how old it is by it's time on earth.

I think they are going by it's overall age.

Well, I don't know if he/she does or doesn't have a meteorite, it was my awkward way of asking for more info.  But, you are correct, in general I am skeptical, 300 wrongs in the last couple years to get one new "meteor-right".  If I had a meteorite for ever time someone said they had a meteorite and didn't, I'd have a lot more meteorites.

I understand. Under our rain spout in the front yard sat a black rock. It was there for 25 years or so before I picked it up to look at it. Turns out, it was a meteorite sitting there all that time. I did have to take it to the local University natural sciences people to be sure. I would not have guessed what it was only by looking at it. It weighed 4kg (nearly 9 pounds) and resides in their labs as a specimen now.

Were you remunerated for your find or did they say thank you and show you the door.  In other words did they lay claim as an ancient artifact which you weren't supposed to have in your posession. Grin

Gramps, I gave it to them willingly and refused remuneration. I have a relationship with them on a few levels and it was a nice donation for them. I get to research historical sites where metal detectors are totally off limits because of my contributions in the past. I also do crime scene stuff for the local constabulary (police) upon request.

The on ground time delay is recurring story.  After dark flight there is a dark plight until the material is recognized  Smiley.  Came across one that sat in a garden for 30 years.  Just the other day folks brought in a chondrite, 17-18 years ago the local college said it wasn't a meteorite so it sat on a shelf.  There's a lot of folks with a hopefuls, sometimes the real deal.
