Garrett Grand Master CX II
« on: March 25, 2011, 02:21:24 pm »
Go Up Go Down

i have a garrett grand master cx II that I bought new many years ago.  My question is .. do i really need to upgrade to a newer one or is this one just as good as the ones with all the bells and whistles?  I have used it in the past but not a whole lot of hours on it.  Still in real good shape, the only thing is the detector chirps a little when the cable going into the coil is bumped.  This happened before under warrenty and I sent it in.  They said nothing wrong with it and this is normal for it.   Has anyone else experienced this and is this normal or not?  Any info would be great.

May the glint of gold always be in your eye.

Has the locking nut on the cable come loose or is there a crack near by in the lead

If you Secure the Cable going straight up the shaft about 7 or 10 inches up, I think most of that will go away.

I use Velcro Wraps or Electrical tape.

That noise when bumped is very normal. Remember what a cable is made from. Metal. Your detector is sensing its own cable moving when you bump it. The cable jiggles and your machine senses it above the coil. Remember that your coil has two fields. One above it and one below. Normally there's just air above it.

Secure your cable as you have been advised by either wire ties, bread ties, tape or Velcro cable ties and see how much quieter it gets. Your machine is a wonderful one and will give you years more service before you need to upgrade. The only limiting factor is the weight. You'll have arms like Popeye before long. Remember to switch swinging arms now and again to keep them looking even.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I agree with my compadres---and especially with GD....the only real advantage of a newer detector is that most of them are a whole lot lighter....So if you don't mind the weight or you've rigged up a system to take some of the weight of your arm, why switch from a classic that still produces?
