Go Up Go Down

I was out detecting (no surprise). It started raining. I kept detecting.  Idiot
The rain got stronger. I got an umbrella... kept detecting. Started getting ghost signals. I guess I couldn't maintain ground balance or something (I don't know). I quit detecting Angry

Not the end of the story.....

Next day. Brought out the Garrett. Fog inside the display. Had to abandon the hunt and clean inside with with a cloth and let air dry completely.

Question: Can I seal the display with some sort of sealant? If so... what kind? Will it affect my machine? (I certainly hope not!!! Cry )

Moral of the story: Always try to maintain enough sense to get out of the rain. Crazy

Have you ever thought of getting a length of clear plastic and seal the ends with duct tape?
I first got into the water using a Garrett master hunter ADS that was designed for land use but by using an innertube and wooden box I was able to keep it out of the water and use it.   Improvise and overcome!  anything the human mind can concieve and believe it can achieve.  best of luck.

Thanks Alan for your suggestion. I had considered that but the duct-tape would leave a sticky residue on my machine and the plastic would distort the view of my lcd. I was hoping that a sealant between the lcd plate and the housing would essentially waterproof the lcd board but I am afraid of damaging my machine which could be worse than the fog incurred from using it in the rain. I'm sure someone here has run across a similar problem (mders don't like to stop once they get started hehe Grin)  Any help is appreciated.

By the way, Alan. I read your posts and I am impressed by the way you search for the TRUTH and not just a theory. I have always been appalled by theories when a little research would eliminate the historical gap. Thanks again and best regards,
kd

In a pinch, unplug the headphones then use a grocery bag or small garbage bag over the entire unit including the handle. Plug the headphones back in through the plastic bag (yes, punch a hole in it as you do so) and go back to work. The detector will survive that way and you can simply throw that bag away when the day is done. For the time it's raining, skip the visual. It won't kill you to be in total suspense rather than risk damaging your detector.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Grin You're right GD1950. And to think.... I was so careful to set the umbrella over the Garrett when I stopped swinging to dig. One puff of wind offset the balance of everything. Sounds like you've had an experience or two like mine  Grin.
I was worried people here would think I was an MD abuser  :Smiley. I'm not.... just a little too enthusiastic sometimes. And as my Daddy used to say, "Not enough sense to get out of the rain". Grin

Live and learn! HH all,

KD,
I thought I was the only detectorist in the world who used plastic to cover my Garret, that I was ashamed to talk about it. Now I can stand proud among heroes  Cheesy

At Wollie World, they supply detectorist
with free plastic bags.

They do not advertise this, but they have
rolls of plastic bags sitting in the produce
section just for covering metal detectors.. lol

Happy Huntin,
