Good luck with your quest and getting permission. I too, hope the husband or wife haven't decided to find the *treasure* themselves. If you found it, it would mean so much more to you. Grats on your purchase. Have fun.

I think I'm fighting a losing battle inasmuch as Hubby hasn't called me yet. I called information and got their phone number as well as looked it up on the internet white pages and have dialed it quite a few times but nobody ever answers. I'm thinking that they have caller ID and upon seeing my name and number, he is ignoring the call. I don't quite understand why since the wife seemed quite friendly and also sympathetic to my quest.
I may give it another week or so and then go back in person and talk to the wife. If nothing positive comes of it, I guess I'll throw in the towel.  Undecided

Michael

.....for the time being.   Add it in to your active file of leads and then try again in 6 months to a year or if you hear they're selling the place.    Just because it is "no" now doesn't mean it will be no later (there could be things happening right now that legitimately have the guy distracted).

I also just picked up a Garrett AT, but the gold model. I would suggest you get some serious time in before you go after your main prize anyhow.  Take this time to get to know the machine.  It sounds like this is your first metal detector?  So go to a beach or sand box where no one will mind you digging and practice pinpointing, and recovering targets. Another good place to practice is your own yard. Some kid there was probably throwing rocks at birds with his moms ring on 50 years ago. Smiley

So many hobbies, so little time. No no! Well, not really; I'm retired, so I've got plenty of free time. Sometimes it just seems like a 24 hour day is not enough time to persue all my hobbies such as metal detecting, RC airplane and helicopter flying, model railroading with my grandson, biking, walking, birding, reading, and woodworking.
It's tough going, but I think I can survive it.  Wink
My wife told me today that she wants to go with me the next time I go out with my Garrett AT Pro. Who knows, maybe she will get the bug.  Detecting

So what happened with the ring? Did you get permission to look for it?

No. I finally went back over to the owner's house and talked to the wife again. I had previously given her my phone number, but hubby never called me over a two month period. So, she gave me his cell number, and I called him directly and asked him for permission. He denied me permission stating that he also liked to metal detect and that he wanted to detect his own property. He also said that he since I had made him aware that I'd lost my Mom's ring he would be on the lookout for it and get it back to me if he ever finds it. At no time during the conversation did he ask me for my phone number or address, so I'm not very confident that he will ever contact me. I could be wrong and hope that I am.

I haven't been out detecting for quite a while now. My 92 year old father-in-law hasn't been doing very well, so either my wife or I have to be with him constantly. He falls a lot and can't get up on his own.
I don't mind helping him out as he and my mom-in-law (God rest her soul) have been good to me for many years. Not only that he is a genuine WWII war hero in my eyes and deserves to be treated well during his last years. There are not many of WWII vets left now and they are going at the rate of several thousand per week.
