BitburgAggie_7377 is dead on.... dig everything.... til you get a feel for the detector..... it sounds like a sucky soloution.... but you won't learn the machine any other way.....  when i decide to take a new machine as my number one.... it always takes me a month before it sinks in....  I AM NOT patient.... so it's six times more difficult for me to settle in and learn.... but when i give up and give in.... i end up getting some dar n good finds.... don't give up....  Smiley

With the Nature of the VLF and Discrimination, you will lose Gold Rings if you Turn off Pull tabs and stuff.

Nickels fall under the same in detection.

I my self do not follow TID because Computers Lie!  Thank God this machine is made for Humans!

After a spell you will be able to hear the tones.

You will be hearing the double bleep of a long object like a Nail, Hair pin, and even a coin on edge.

Learn the Music!!

Every thing makes a new tone, sound, fast, slow, long, deep or high!

Take your time.

Dig it all for a while and you will find out what I'm talking about.

People that depend on the machine telling them when to dig Loose!

I Love them!! Violent

This is not a Dig when it say so thing if you want to find the Goodies!

I was digging with a pocket knife.  I could hear the difference between the knife and the trash.  The trash had a fuzzy tone and the knife was sharp.  But, when I toned my wedding ring, I could not tell between that and the aluminum.  I am also using cheap headphones.  Would they make a big difference.

I was just happy I got the thing to do this much.  I am pretty happy with the groundhog so far.

I MAY not be after I have dug my 3500th pull tab.  But, hopefully I will have found some good stuff by then.

Any hints for digging a public beach?

Pest,

Went out to the beach this morning with my girls.  Interesting day,  First time to really put the groundhog to work.  Kind of figuring it out.  Used both modes with limited results.  I did find 3 coins, whopping 27 cents, but it proves I can find coins Smiley  A Big stainless washer, and a fork.  Then the mystery items.  A metal handle from something and a blob of Aluminum I think, probably from a bond fire.  And something that had been grown on for years.  green corrosion like parallel bars of Copper or brass.  Not sure what to think, likely go in the wife's flower bed.

I went 3 hours,  That thing is heavy and hard on the wrist.  I nearly through my cheap earphones in the gulf.  Kept falling off my ears because I had a hat on and the cord kept snagging the detector and pulling them off.  I was using a mall spade to dig.  Worked okay for everything except the coins. They are hard to see in the shells.

All in all, a nice morning out with the family.  Nothing to picture yet, but much closer than if I had not gone.

sounds like a great day to me.... the first time i went beach combing with my vaquero.... i found a sinker...several cut padlocks.... more aluminum beer cans than i could count.... and every piece of twisted metal ever dumped in the water on that day.... i would have killed for a crummy zink penny Grin
and for the record.... i quit usein head phones for the same reason.... the audio on your detector should be plenty loud enough....i've never had so much wind i couldnt hear a target....have i missed any targets?Huh? maby.... but if i did.... it's still thar for someone else to find....
don't give up.... next time.... you're gonna find a ring.....

Be sure to ground balance it.  Then set the discrimination to pick up nickles.  Yep, you will dig some trash but you will also be surprised at the goodies you have been missing.  As for shredded or crushed aluminum cans, every detector I've ever owned gets fooled by them including the super-whiz-bang computer controlled ones.

Thanks guys for the encouragement.

Are there any special tools you use at the beach.  I was using a small garden spade.

Get a sand scoop.  I like the ones with a long handle that lets me stand upright.  Scoop up sand, move to the side, and shake.  The sand runs out the holes and whatever else stays behind.

Garrett Groudhog, White Classic SL

Go Up Go Down

I've got a Garrett ground hog and it seems like it doesn't stay tune because I have to push the Tune botton every few minutes or it doesn't detect anything. Perhaps I'm not understanding the complexity of the device. I've been spending a lot of time with my White Classic series machine finding coins, and finding a fair amount of near surface coins, and I've gotten real good with it, but I'm getting annoyed because I know the Garrett might have better features. I can't afford to upgrade right now and I want to get the best from the two detectors I have. Any help is greatly appreciated.
