So I'm planning a great beach, sun & surf vacation, and of course I want to take my trusty detector with me.  I'm just a bit concerned about what the airlines is going to say when I try to bring my detector along.  Since 9/11 they've gotten so crazy about what they will and will not let you bring.  Do I have to put my detector in "checked baggage" where it might get damaged, or can it be a carry-on? Does anyone have any experience with this?  Are any airlines better about this than others?

I flew around the world with two machines in my checked-in baggage. In Thailand, they asked me to open it and explain what it was. Then they asked me to show them it worked as I said it did. When finished, they sealed my baggage and all was well when I returned to Perth.

Not a problem at all in and out of the USA. No questions asked.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I had three machines when i flew to the UK and stopping over in Bali I let my luggage be loaded on the plane.  In Bali, customs were very interested in my machines and asked me for what purpose I needed them.  So, I explained that I was a professor of Archaeology and these were the tools of my trade and profession and would be giving lectures to a couple of univerisities in the interest of scientific development and research in order to record Bali's past history.
With that I was passed through as if I was royalty and thought if I ever went to a strange country it was a good line to use.. hehe it worked for me I wouldnt try my luck in Ireland though hehe  Wise

I have traveled outside of the USA with metal detectors in the past.  I took them apart and wrapped the parts in the clothes for protection.  I also took receipts showing that they were mine and not being sold wherever you are visiting.  Had no problems.  Be sure that all batteries are removed and everything is disconnected.  A beep would definitely draw attention to your suit case.

Enjoyment on the beach is best.  Treasure hunting doesn't go over well.

Hope you have a great vacation.

Ok, that was impressive...  You even had me believing it for a moment!  I'd hate to play poker with you!  You bluff REALLY well! Smiley

Those are great suggestions.  I've seen how the baggage handlers "gently" handle our luggage, and I was afraid of what I'd see when I opened my luggage upon arrival.  Nice to hear it can be done successfully.  Have you ever tried bringing it as a carry-on, or is that out of the question?

With security checks that take place these days think yourself lucky its going onboard even if it is going in the hold.
If you start trying things like that you might draw attention to yourself play it low key stay safe and get there and back.
enjoy have fun

Alan, that's true enough!  I'll be happy just to have my favorite detector with me.  I just hate checking luggage.  One piece of advice I've gotten is to describe it to the ticket agent as a "hobby metal detector for finding lost items."

There's a size limit (length) for carry-on luggage. My Garrett will not break down small enough to fit that limit. Aside from that I would be worried about all the pushing, shoving, moving and the occasional dropping of your carry-on luggage. My carry-on was my laptop and I kept a sharp eye on it for fear that a clumsy fellow passenger might have an accident with it. Shocked If you pack it safely then it's actually safer (sorta) in checked luggage.  Wink

Have a great vacation!
Ken

I was able to bring 3 detectors to Italy and 4 to Poland and they were all well packed in my luggage without any problems.  My only concern at this time would be if I could get away with bringing that many with me.  My trip to Poland included an International Treasure Hunt and it was great to meet people from so many places.  Everyone, except me, stayed in a fort built by Napoleon.  If you are still considering taking it as hand luggage, perhaps you can just bring the control box on board and pack the rest.  That would make it smaller and easier to store.

Good luck.
