Things are pretty liberal in Australia, in some states you need a licence to detect, National Parks are off limits, you need permission for private land and thats about it. Your detector is welcome Down Under. Regards, Brian

Does it make any difference what you are metal detecting for? Would you need a permit for hunting gold and not one for coins, etc.

Australia is an unbelievably rich country when it comes to gold and there are thousands of individuals who make a living dredging- metal detecting, etc for gold. Sometimes I wish I could move down there and hunt for those huge nuggets.

Some states do require a licence. I live in South Australia and no licence is required for any type of detecting. In Western Australia which has huge goldfields a once off licence is needed for gold detecting, I think it is currently $20 for a lifetime.
Victoria it is a 2 year licence.  New South Wales, none but you are limited to 20grams per 24 hours ....... what do you do if the nugget is 30grams?  stupid rule, which as you would expect is ignored.
Queensland requires a fossickers Licence for 3 months - 12 months, even a family licence.
No states that I am aware of require a licence for for coins or artifacts.
I spend most winters detecting in the Western Australian goldfields, there are some rules relating to permission to enter mining leases and Pastoral properties, I find it pretty straight forward and if you ask first you are seldom refused. Crown land is OK but not National Parks.

Thanks for the info- Yeah the 20grs in 24 hours is a really silly rule. Makes me wonder if you any ex Americans down there making  your laws.

Hello Karoly!

Are you a Gaijin living in Japan? I was a collector of Japanese Nihonto and bet that hunting on old Japanese battlefields would get you lots and lots of good finds! Have you asked at your local town council they probably should know.

Best wishes,

Christian
