previous to the revolutionary war, there were plenty of skirmishes between brits & france,indians,americans,spanish,ect... here in western pa.
anyways, the fact is,when general dunbar learned of a huge (at that time) army of 2500 brits were on his trail in search of him, they burned everything in the camp.everything except for what they were wearing and could carry off in a hurry.
this way they figured at least,if worse came to worse, the brits would gain nothing
now for the legend...
allthough i have never witnessed any documentation on the following matter,i have been told this by three diff. lawyers, and one timber barron.
dunbar ordered all gold to be put in a cannon and buried.he also ordered all silver to be put in a cannon and buried.
don't know if it has ever been recovered or anything else about it,but it sure makes for some difficult sleeping sometimes!
happy dirtfishin!
