John Dillinger traveled from Detroit to Miami on the now defunct Semolina Airlines and his suitcase was misdirected to Peoria. Then it went by Railway Express to Oshkosh where it was then diverted to Wawakesa and later taken by mule to a cabin in the deep woods where it remains today. Look on Google Maps and find the big X on top of the cabin roof.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have seen a documentry on this once years back..believe it was the owner of the place as she showed the bullet holes and the place where the money was believed to be buried and how she has looked for it many times. Someone had detected there and found a pistol in the rivers edge or lake can't remember believed to have belonged to one of the gang members..that's about all I remember of the show but remember that it was an interesting watch.

Thats a good link WIhunter, thanks and welcome to the forum.

Interesting Mona, that could be a good clue where the pistol was found.

I really do have to wonder about Patricia's story as so many have looked for it, and it shouldn't have been that hard to find for someone who knew where to look. Either it's hidden a bit better than it sounded, already quietly picked up by someone, or was never left behind at all.

From the look of the other suitcase they left at LB there may not be much metal in it so perhaps its still just waiting in the dirt?  Smiley I know if I lived close by I would have to take a look myself.

Go Up Go Down

As far as I could find the sole source of this story (the hiding part) was Patricia. I am wondering if it was a ruse. She sent her lawyer to find it while she was in jail. Perhaps she felt he would be followed? Then again perhaps it's still waiting....

She was at Little Bohemia that night, perhaps JD told her he was going to bury it, but the news report tells of 3 men getting into a ford sedan and driving off under fire from federal agents. Machine gun fire then errupted from the roof where Nelson was supposedly stationed. He was believed to be the one who killed agent Baum and took his car. The sedan was fired on days later and blood was found inside after it was abandoned.

Another version also has them sneaking through the woods stealing first a pickup then trading it for a stolen coupe. Perhaps the three that fled in the news report were other gang members.

I'll try and post the articles.

The more I look into this the more I think that the suitcase was taken out that night by one of the bandits or hid and found a short time later by either the police or a local. If I was in the area I would check and see who showed up with money buying property etc over the 18 months following the shot out.
