hi Bigwater,  the stone was found in a cave , does not mean it was used there, the stone could be used as a sundial outside for crop planting times annualy ,or dividing the day into four units.

Got you.  during my first reading of the OP, I gathered that it had been fixed at the time it was found due to the "it was supposedly on the floor not the walls" statement, but in re-reading the OP I see I may have been assuming too much.

that is a ancient toothbrush holder for a family of four the middle spots where the toothpaste went .(I get the award for the most creative answer) but in reality we'll  probably never know.

Darn, I didn't know we were going for creative..  How about a neolithic "TV dinner" tray?  Each grove held an individual Mammoth chop, and the center grove held the dipping sauce?  I envision a "Fred Flintstone" type sitting and eating from it.  Idiot
