Does anybody have good images of these stones. Most of what you can find on the net are little grainy low resolution pictures. I would like to see all the details available to find all the signs. Something like 600-2400 dpi full sized or from a 3-5 mega-pixel digital camera at it's best output.

Thanks

Here's a couple of web sites that have pretty decent pictures. Below was one I found that was just by itself with no text so I snagged it. Sue

OUCH! Peg leg refers to the Priest carving , as a witch.

Outback, just park along the road to the dam, and look closely at the NW face of the mountain and you will see several of the symbols shown on the maps, including what is commonly known locally as the, Priest Rock.

I found what I believe to be the flat stone shown with the cross on top, below the cross the priest is holding. There was a 4 inch turtle carved on the side of the rock. You have to put your head down to the ground to see it.

Dowsing indicates a small chamber about 12 feet below the rock  containing some sort of documents, and a small piece of gold that seems to be on a necklace.

There is a story of a Spanish mission near the NW face of the mountain, and of the recovery of a huge Silver church bell that was dragged down from the north face of the mountain , where it had been hidden.   Dell

Thanks Sue, I read those sites.

Dell, I don't think these stone maps have anything to do with the LDM mines. Features like you have pointed out and others that have been found that reflect the stones are beyond just a few people doing. I think it is a major deposit that was well planned out and executed. I think the stones are directions on how to make a map, not a map in themselves.
-------
Alidade

The term alidade can refer to the sighting mechanism of any instrument used for surveying or navigation. In this catalog the term refers to the sighting mechanism used with a plane table for topographical work—that is, for mapping the surface features of the earth. Early alidades were simple bars with open sights at either end. Telescopic alidades came into use in Europe in the early 1800s, and were soon introduced to American practice. In 1865 the United States Coast Survey stated that the plane table with telescopic alidade was the

“principal instrument for mapping the topographical features of the country,”

and noted that it was “universally recognized as the most efficient and accurate means for that purpose.”
------------

I think if I had good photos I would be able to tell what features are original and what features were added to confuse. Copies I have seen are missing features. In some cases a guess was made on symbols.  The large hole on one stone looks just like a alidade mounting hole. Together with the measured beaded rope for pulling distance it looks like an engineer or surveyor designed the stones. Even put together the stones will not reveal a location until the original map is redrawn. Well that's my notion for today anyway.

I've alway thought these stones were associated with the myth of the Lost Dutchmans Mine .

The maps were found at the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, where the Lost Dutchman Mine is, so naturally everyone thinks they lead to his mine. I disagree, though I believe the treasure they lead to is in the Superstitions somewhere Smiley

A big thanks to everyone who has help in locating these stone maps. I will be doing an analysis of the images over the next few years.
