Hello Soulis 1

Thank you for the interesting Photographs.

Are able to tell me the approximate area of the Markers. Mainland Greece, Crete or Greek Islands?

If I was to guess what the markers are..........

The date 1940 I suspect they are related to the Greco-Italian War was a conflict between Italy and Greece which lasted from 28 October 1940 to 23 April 1941. It marked the beginning of the Balkans Campaign of World War II. From the 6 April 1941 intervention of Nazi Germany onwards, the conflict is known as the Battle of Greece.

The cross swords represents a battle and the two crosses represent This heraldic cross is made from four Latin Crosses arranged at right-angles to each other, with their tops pointing north, south, east and west. The Cross crosslet, like the Jerusalem Cross, is a symbol for world evangelism of the Gospels, which gives an alternative name: Mission Cross.

Another common interpretation is that it represents the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (see Evangelists' Cross). The Cross Crosslet is sometimes confused with the St. Julian's Cross or Jerusalem Cross.

Where only three Latin Crosses are used, the symbol represents the Trinity. Often the cross is fitched, with the lower crossed-arm is replaced by a sword blade, as in the Cross of St. James.

St. James the Greater is the patron of the Order of Saint James of Compostela. This military order of knights began in the year 1171, to protect pilgrims who were visiting St. James's shrine.

Crossed Swords pointing upwards show the readiness to fight. Downward pointing swords imply the fight is over.

How these symbols are related in what context is very open to interpenetration. The date strongly suggests an 1940's battle zone.

If I was to guess the location I say the marking are near the border with Albania?

Hardluck

Hello Soulis 1

The marker you have mentioned cannot be connected as they pertain to different time frames. Greece has wonderful history I cannot think you could go anywhere without finding reminders of the past.

I heard a story who elderly man who has since passed away was a Australian commando in WW2. Working under SOE. he was a specialist trainer for Greek guerrilla fighters who fought the Germans and Italians. He was parachuted in 1941. He claimed money went missing from air drops supporting the Greeks. He told me a story about stolen gold and money buried in a ruined church on a mountain pass possibly the Metsovo pass in the mountains in northern Greece.

You may find out a little more in the British archives about service personnel that were there at the time.

There is some thing else but my memory fails me at the moment.

Hello Soulis 1

Here is an article From Sept 2006 of lost treasure Magazine about a discovery in Pindus mountains of Northern Greece. I am a little dubious of the story.

I have heard of the name of man who found it somewhere.

but It may be of interest.
