I'm trying to find a stout military shovel and case/cover that goes on my belt.

Currently I have a tri-fold shovel that I have... its really cheap and loosens up ...bends etc.

{alt}

I am currently flirting with getting a German shovel or a Hungarian shovel. I was wondering if you had used either of these to good effect or if theres a better model I've overlooked. The idea is to go light and mobile, Im gettin tired of carryin the Home Depot spade around in one hand.

I have used the US GI (Goverment Issue) Shovel and the  German shovel ,

the good thing about the GI shovel is the serrated edges to chop cut branches etc. u don't get that with the others, go to a good surplus store and purchase a "real" GI shovel , they are a lot better than the knock offs
there are lots of companies making shovels that look like the GI issue but they are not.

U will know the Difference buy the way it feels and the weight.

Good Luck to You and Happy Hunting !!

Yeah.... I reckon my copy is a very cheap version... the washer where the blade locks up bends in when you dig. I need to hit the Army Navy and fondle a few models.

True on the serrations... however... I am fairly handy with a file and been known to cut my own teeth into stuff. If the German was serrated... would that swing in favor for the German?

yes, U can also spot weld the handle on the GI version so it no longer bends etc. it's all really a personal choice. No one can really make this Decision but you,

if money is not a problem get one of each and use them till u decide which one U like the best ! I have had to do that with several items before , sometimes it's just the only way to get the right one.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting !!

Now theres a fine idea... I got a wire welder and free time.... zap that puppy rigid.

I think you are right... The Hungarian shovel is $10, what the heck. Might as well give it a shot first of the two, not really sure I'd use a pick much with all the sandy soil around here... so it might just be added weight.

I don't use a shovel very much anymore, most of the time I don't need to dig that big of a hole.
I do however own the german version from when I first started and I did use it often at that time. This shovel is tough as nails.I've had it for over 15 years and she is still ready to serve if needed.....
Good luck with it all     Great

Oh yeah sounds like Karl has the right idea with that shovel of yours....

I got the German one and it is very tough, but I use Proper detecting shovels and a small goldminers Pick it's 16" and great
for hard ground, and I carry it in a toolbelt hammer holder, its just the setup that works for me

Check this military shovel out. It is all steel construction and has the serrated edge. Cool

I recently gave my shovel away and have to make a new one. I use an ordinary shovel with the wooden shaft shortened to about 6 inches so I can use it kneeling. If I must, I can still step on it to get some real purchase. I use a piece of hand rail to replace the original shovel shaft and turn it on my wood lathe. You could use a plane and sandpaper instead of the lathe.
