I didn't want to do a survey, just chime in here guys....
So, when you find that bit of gold as rings, jewelry, etc - do you cash it in, auction it off, or keep it? I was curious what the average MD'er does?

All the gold I have found has been rings.  I just keep them.  I was going to sell one of the rings when gold was hovering at nearly $1900/oz., but I found that my wife had given it to our daughter!  So...  I gues I keep it, or give it away!               Detecting

Poptop, My problem is Lately I haven't found any gold. You may have seen the sad little gold pin I found that turned out to be plated. Well that is all in the past year. I'm doing better with silver though. I was out today and found a Barber quarter. Slick as a pancake but still silver!

Seldom, I silver-solder bails on the silver coins I find and use them for jewelry. I found a barber today and I'm going to try engraving the back with my children's birth dates for my wife. I have gravers sitting around for years now. Its time they were used.

Gambo - although old - that's still US currency - and by engraving it, that's defacing US currency. Or, is it only defacing if it's no longer in circulation? I wasn't sure on the rules.
I've seen a few dollar coins like Morgans put into belt buckles, but then they're not being defaced at all.
I know from being a 'Georger' that the definition is that it's legal so long as you don't make the bill 'unusable'. But, that's for paper currency. Not sure how coins would be applied here.

The key in the law is whether the change is made to defraud. For instance, when we were on the gold standard, a double eagle contained $20 worth of gold.  If you shaved of some of the gold and then used the coin to pay for a new horse, you violated the law because you altered the coin in order to defraud the seller.

Lot's of people openly sell jewelry made from coins that have been altered WAY more than that.   I've got the law posted somewhere, but since "search" doesn't work, let me see if I can find the link.
