My best method for depth-testing new detectors is to use a gold ring (since that's what I'm hoping to find!) to a piece of fishing line (so I don't lose it!) and bury it in sand. I gradually add sand, and re-scan the target. This way, I learn how the beeps change at differing depths. The final trick is to pour water on the sand to see how the scanning depth changes in wet soil conditions. This is a great way to get comfortable with a new detector before taking it out in the field.
