Hi folks. I have a question. How deep are those old silver coins that I see folks in youtube videos retrieving so easily in parks and woods? I have hunted those places and so far most of what I find is clad. I have a BH Pioneer 505. Any suggestions of how to look for the elusive silver coins?

Until you can find a virgin area were people gathered silver coins will be far and few. One park in Galveston has had 1000's of silver coins taken out of it over the years starting in the 70's using BFO detectors, as new detectors came out she gave up more and deeper silver. Over the last 10 years I have only heard of maybe 5 silver coins being found, its been hunted to death. Most parks that are easy to get to have been hunt out.
Keep looking you will find a honey hole.

Thank you sir. I feel that most Chicago parks and woods have been hunted to death too.  Angry So I'll keep looking. I've only found 2 rosies, one in my front yard and one in a baseball field at a seemingly dry park. If I found that virgin spot or honey hole, how deep am I expecting to find those coins?

)......in fact a big section of a park close to me is being "resurfaced" now.   In addition, very large parks like Central Park in New York, Breckenridge Park in San Antonio, or Lincoln, Grant, and Jackson parks up in your neck of the woods often get repurposed and/or redesigned.   If you can get your hands on old maps of these parks, you might just find yourself some honey-holes that no one knows about because everyone has forgotten about that trail or that formerly spectacular sight.   (For instance Breckenridge Park had a skyride for many, many years.  It was dismantled in 2002.  Think of the possibilities if you hunted the area that used to be under the sky ride).

And when it comes to depth, unless someone is familiar with the area that you are hunting in, they really can't give you a good estimate.  A whole lot depends on soil conditions and on how frequently the soil gets replentished through leaf decay, etc.   Here in the desert southwest, where soil moisture is so low that we usually have a crust even on soft sand, it isn't unusual for a coin to remain on or near the surface for decades.  (plus, no matter how long it has been there, it isn't likely to "sink" below the bedrock).

If you are sure there is silver there, slow down. The biggest mistakes that people make is believing that their machine will do all the work. Slow down and listen to those faint, hard to hear signals. Use the tone discrimination mode on your Bounty Hunter and listen very, very carefully. If the silver is there, you'll find it.

Thank you. You guys are really inspirational. I got very motivated by the Socorro story. Today I went after the gold rings and the silver and ended up with a personal record of 20 nickels that otherwise I'd ignore because they are in the same threshold of pull tabs. I'm learning with you a lot guys. I check this forum everyday twice a day. You guys really keep me in the hunt Wink

Turn the discriminator off or way down and dig it all in old parks home sites etc. Its worth digging a few tabs to get a nice silver quarter or two.

My current MD settings can find silver no probem. I have found a couple of rosies and a silver ring. It is that I have not yet come across with the right spots. Pull tabs and iron? I have dug out tons of them. I do dig out almost everything that may sound like probable gold or silver. I'll keep looking, I think patience is the name of the game in this hobby? Is not it?  Undecided

Ok, Thanks. I learned my lesson. Since I may pause the hunting during our long winter, I'll devote more time to research and then go for that silver next Spring.  Great. I'll let you know guys when I find it.
