So, i am pedestrian and think to buy Garmin GPS 60 (because of low price of my buddy). And on other forums i looked discussions of data - police stations, swamps, springs, good fishing places... What do you mark (sign) there?

A droid should work, and i have one, but i usually use a etrex legend. I know, a little old, but it works well, and you can probaly pick one up cheap on ebay.

I'm old fashion with a map and compass but I know the basics of GPS and see a need to get one.
I'm looking for one but there so costly for a good one.

my primary reason for having a GPS is to record important finds or areas that I want to come back to.   (Yes, it can be done the old-fashioned map and compass way using tiangulation, but it's more accurate and faster with the GPS)

i have a magellin and use it all the time. the wife and i do a lot of window shopping.....we ride around
looking at scenery and when i see a spot that looks rewarding ill pull over and mark it on the GPS and
when ive learnt all the background info i can go right back to the spot. the one i have has notepad

I have 3 of them 2 Gamins and a Magellan. All do the same thing, just some are better in heavy tree cover and one does the water CG markings also...   I use them mostly for Geocaching here and when ever we travel.... Another hobby in itself....  In metal detecting, I use it more to get back to a spot in a big open field that was productive or even in the woods, for cellar holes out in the woods.  Same on a big beach with miles of sand, but some spots just seem to produce so I mark them and save to GPS...Or if you like give it a number and write it on a small not pad...  If griding a big area, it will get you back to where you left off also.  Also salt water, hot spots...it will get you back there, just carry it in a water proof case for cameras.

I find that a GPS is invaluable when hunting large fields.  I use a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx which will usually get me back within a few feet of where I want to be.  I also use it for geocaching and am also an avid arrowhead hunter and rockhound.  I always have the GPS with me when in the field, woods or desert if for nothing else but to get back to my vehicle.

I use the GPSmap 60CSX most of the time, but have my Legend 60C also...Usually let friends that go Geocaching with me use it....    My wife uses it a lot here on the farm.  They go horse back riding a lot and make new trails, some 20 mile loops, so they set up the tracking on it and we later move them over on top of Google or the Garmin MapSource Topo.   Really does a nice job....We just print them out for the riders and they are good to go.    We travel a lot down South from CT here to Charleston SC to see my daughter.  I usually look up on Google Earth all the Geocaches that are on our way down and do that to break up the drive also....   At age 68 I needed some motivation to get moving more and the Geocaching and just hiking does the trick. I found some great walking areas with it.  Like you I have a lot of interest so always manage to mix them up.

Have a buddy in Wasahington State who lives close to Mt ST Helens...I use it on the trails there a lot with him....  Never had to use it to get back to the car, but its nice to know its marked on there if you need it.....

Tnx for reply....      George-CT
