I saw in the New York Times last week that Bird Talk magazine has folded.  And that got me to thinking:

I used to write regularly for Treasure Quest magazine.  I subscribed to Treasure and Treasure Search and Treasure Found and True Treasure and Treasure World.

What do these magazines have in common?  None of them exist now.

Why did they all disappear?

In this episode of In the Treasure Corner, we examine several reasons that magazines find it difficult to survive today.

I for one miss the old stories in those rags.

Lost Treasure was my forte!

Bought my first detector back in the 70's out of that mag.

Crusader BFO, Yep that's what it was.

Took me months to con my mom out of her hard earned Waitress wages of $50.00 for that thing.

Popped in a Battery.

Read the 1 page instructions and away I went.

Fired it up, Walked out the front door.

Did the  Put Put Put Put Weeerrrrrr Woooooopi Deeer thing around the Front Porch.

Found my first coin.   A 1953 Silver Quarter two feet from the Front Porch.

I've been Hopless every sence.

My story is similar.  My first detector was a $29.95 Jetco Mustang BFO, bought at the Woolco in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1973.

My first hunt was in my yard, and I found a penny in the front yard, and a few minutes later, a gold high school class ring in the back yard.

Guess you can tell I was hooked, too!

I miss the old magazines, too!  I wrote for a bunch of them; Treasure, Treasure Found, Treasure Search, the old Western Treasures, Lost Treasure...  They were good ones!

My first detector was also the Crusader, bought from an ad in a treasure mag in '71 or '72!  First find right out the front door was an 1898 Indian Head penny!

Thanks Dan for the reminder!                   Detecting

Love your Compass collection, Arfie!  My first good detector was a Judge 6.  Crazy depth, but you had to retune it every time you went from sunshine to shade.

I still have a couple Compasses - a Coin Scanner and and X-70 (or maybe it's an X100 - I'm too lazy to go out to the garage to check).

GoldDigger says, "They're still around. I subscribe to Lost Treasure as I have for many years."

---------------------------------------

Yes, but in title only.  The Lost Treasure we remember fondly was the one run by Long John Latham, who also did True Treasure and Treasure World.  (In fact, he combined those two, which each came out every other month, into Lost Treasure, which came out every month.)

Long John Latham mag's were the best. Didn't Bill Mahan start lost treasure and sell out to Long John in the late 60's. Y'all know we dating our self to the kids around here.

Bill may have started it, but it wasn't called Lost Treasure until about 1975, long after Latham took control (before 1975 it was two magazines - True Treasure and Treasure World - and one of them came out in odd-numbered months and the other in even-numbered months.)
