I currently use a Whites DFX and am thinking about getting something specifically for gold prospecting. Reading all the sales pitches can make your eyes cross so I thought I would ask and see what everyone thought.

Appreciate any input you might have, if you like a machine you have or dont. Thanks!  Smiley

Kinda depends on how much money you want to spend, and time to dedicate to it, White's makes a good one, Fisher, Garrett, and Minelab, there are some dealers, one I have talked to, and he dosen't try to push selling what he  handles, this guy gold detects a lot, and is very informative, I believe his name is Gerry, good guy, and very straightforward, he does have a dealership I believe in nevada or oregon, he won't try and sell something, but has classes even, might try and look him up.He's just a detectorist from what I can figure out, one that knows what he is doing. Garrett made the best nugget detectors in the 80's but now I don't have a clue. The guys from Oz will be the ones with the best answers to this. I hear GD want even dig them unless they are over 3 oz. so let wait and see his recommendation.

Thanks for the input guys! I was comparing the Garrett prospecting machines to the Whites one. All the Garrett machines operate in the 15khz range which is very similar to the DFX. There are a couple from Whites which operate at 45khz which I read was better for nugget shooting. So many decisions and I havent really even looked at Fisher and Minelab yet  Grin

Your budget and where you are hunting makes the real difference. The Minelab 4500 is the top of the line but it isn't good for much else because it doesn't discriminate. The Whites TDI is a good compromise if you want a multi use detector and costs much less. I personally use the Minelab 4000 with some success. I know guys who use the Whites and have found more gold than I have. I have also found gold with a Tesoro Lobo. Gold is where you find it and maybe I could have found nuggets with an ACE 250. It is just hard to tell. The real advantage to the PI units is they are not as bothered by the hot rocks so you get more time detecting for real signals instead of turning over lots of rocks. What ever you use nugget hunting is a blast.

Yep. Down here a 3 ouncer is a micronugget. We leave them to grow into really nice nuggets. First rainfall, they sprout.

There's a little known manufacturer of really low cost gold detectors designed for Australia's Jack Lange. Old Jack used to organize tours into the outback and provided metal detectors to those who went. Minelabs mostly, but now the new tour operator uses these and swears they are truly magical for finding gold nuggets.

White's GMT

I use a White's GMT.  It ground balances very easily to ignore mineralized rock and focus strictly on gold.  It's not the cheapest on the market, but not the most expensive either.  Most importantly, it works well if what you're after is hunting gold.

GoldDigger, that Gold Snoop Pro does look like a good little machine.    I wonder how many "honey dos" I need to get done before my wife would let me buy one and import it into the US?

Thanks Bugar & Junker I will check those out.

GoldDigger That is a nice simple little machine. Very interesting.

Thanks Bigwater, I use a whites now so I was thinking the learning curve might be quicker.

So many choices....
