denizen, don't worry about the amperage. 12 volts is 12 volts. you could use a auto car battery to power it or 8 AAAs. and it would still draw the same amperage.gambol Wise

I see, I see. But I was just wondering if that A23/A27 tiny 12v battery would be capable of putting out enough amps, would it stress it and only last for 10 minutes, or would I need to use 2 or 3 in parallel(this would save me some space as compared to 8AAs)? What's the amperage output of a AA? I think it's like 1500mA and the A23/A27 give out 23A/27A. I really want to make the tiny batteries work but It's looking like I am stuck with a big n bulky battery pack.

Thanks for the knowledge on amperage draw!

I see your problem now. I found a really strong 12 volt lithium battery designed for a LED flash light. It was about half the length of a AA and as big as a nickle. I'll see if I can find that flash light.

that battery sounds epic! i want it. i was at the stor today and i saw a few 12v batts that werehalf the length of an AA. i can't imagine the amperage hours would last very long in a metal detector so i was thinking putting 3 in parallel to make it last a little longer. i'm planning on putting a closed circuit chassis audio jack(that's a mouthful) to use headphones with to save power. or just not use a speaker and use solely the headphones.

did you find that LED flashlight?

@avision4u2liveby: haha, you would have to change your battery only once a year! or your arm would catch fire from the detector when you hit the on switch. that's a funny image to imagine..   Grin

I looked for the flashlight but did not find it. I used the flashlight for 3 years before it got weak then replaced the battery once and I think I got the replacement at radio shack. gambol

Not true at all. If your device requires 12v at 3 amps and you only supply 2, it is underpowered and will not work properly.

Wont too many amps blow stuff up? I mean a car battery at 750 amps compared to a detector at say 3 amps? Seems like something would have to give lol.

LOL!  NO!   You Could use a 10,000 Amp battery if you wanted to carry it.    In the Electron World  Volts is the Difference in Potential (Push or Pull).

Amps is the Amount that Can Flow!

Look as a Battery like Lake.

Look at the Voltage as the Pressure the Water fall from the Lake has.

Look at the Amps as the Amount of Water you let over the water fall.
