I use a very large blunted screwdriver and don't use an electronic pinpointing probe.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I use my wife's ice pick (oops) but wish I had a longer one without spending alot of money.  I'm always on the lookout in the kitchen isle and hardware stuff for a longer probe.  I have a pinpointer but my md is so light I just keep swingin over the hole with one hand and probing with the other.  That reminds me its time to schedule my annual physical..sigh.

The purpose of a probe, whether electronic or not (read ice pick, blunted screwdriver, knitting needle, etc), is to help you determine the exact location and depth of the target so you can make the smallest hole possible.   (Plus some people who use the blunted screwdrivers as probe also get really good at popping out coins using the probe rather than having to dig a divot---much kinder to the lawn, but it only works well if you aren't digging in hard ground).

Electronic probes are good at determining the location of the coin, but they won't give you a clue as to the depth.   And, with practice, most detectorists can pinpoint as accurately with their detector as they can with a hand-held electronic probe (so it becomes a matter of saving a little time versus saving a little weight)
