Yep moisture seems to play a big roll also freeze/thaw of the ground pushes things up and down over the winter

This is exactly why I have a new crop of rocks to pick up every spring and after really heavy rains !!

WOW, I just learned sompthing new. I never knew ground moisture had anything to do with the functioning of a MD. Not that it matters in southern Nevada where we have no moisture,  Undecided

Another cause is very few detectorists have the discipline required to search every inch of an area in one search (i.e. don't properly overlap the coil sweeps---not just in terms of making sure that you overlap one-half the coil diameter on each sweep, but also making sure that when you get to the end of the row, your sweep for the return trip overlaps your sweep for the row you just did and/or not keeping the coil parallel to the ground and the proper distance throughout the hunt, etc).   The list of variables is long enough you could probably spend a couple of hours on them.

I was out two days ago and pulling up coins in a spot I worked last spring ,you could still see wear I had dug and pulled up coins right next to the edge of the hole and in the hole that did not show up last year ,(i was shaking my head in disbelief) the moisture in soil and winter thaw was my gut feeling.

when you have dug the target always check around the hole just to make sure you have'nt missed anything,
and when you search do it like mowing the lawn so you don't miss a thing

Hi auminesweeper
Belive me I do check and re check ,just the spot was referring to is a little honey whole for me ,I can find on an average about 2 to 4 bucks in clad in a two foot radious by 6 inches deep ( a tourist spot were they trow $$) last year was very dry when i worked it all so this spot had bed rock 4 inches down in this spot so i think all so was getting a bouncing signel. That happens to me some times like a buried side walk. Thanks for the advise

I only have a short 2 month window to work the area before all the tourist arrive back (and the owner of the property would rather I not be there then) They will soon be open 7 days a week end of next month ,right now only the weekends the location is open and if the weather is bad they are closed.  I love finding coins even clad Smiley not much of a challenge tho
