I've been thinking about trying to talk to some of the local historical groups about detecting on some of the old sites they control.  I was thinking that an offer to plot all finds and give them most/all relics (other than coins) might be convincing.  One of the buildings had a major early Rev War firefight there and I was wondering if plotting detected finds might yield more information on the way the battle was fought and such.

Anyone done anything similar and have any ideas on how best to approach the historical groups?  Any suggestions on what/where to read about how to best save the necessary archeological evidence while detecting?  Anyone GPS record their finds?  Any other thoughts?

Outback is right. You won't know until you ask and see what they say.  Be sure and let us know how it goes for you.  As far as using GPS to record finds I've used one before for the purpose of Seeing where all your finds were and if they were concentrated to certain parts of the area by marking "waypoints" at each find.  I was then able to view it on the GPS or import the files to my computer for review.  Been quite some time since I've done that though.

I asked one county's historical society and they gave me maps, ideas, etc with the understanding that if I found something of historical interest that I'd give it to them, but if I found old coins or common items, they were mine. A couple of the places they thought I'd enjoy were surprising - an old Native American cemetery and a gypsy campground. I tried to check out the campground, but a pack of dogs immediately arrived and I could not negotiate with them. Always think maybe some day I'll try again and have a box of dog biscuits with me. I work with the Camp X Historical Society and have hunted the old area of the Camp..All finds went to them, but now the area is off limits as it is a Historical area.

Heres our website

The Camp was set up in 1941 before the US got involved in WW2, and it was to train Americans in the arts of "Behind the lines warfare"
"Wild Bill Donavan was the top US man involved, the Top Canadian was William Stephenson  ( the man called Intrepid)...the documents held by the US, the UK and Canada are still "top Secret" and cannot be acsessed in any Country.

Great storys there I am sure.

I'm sure it would make some good reading if they had been accessable.
