I do allot of diving and there are quite a few consumer guides for all the different equipment manufactures out there.  In the area of DPV's (dive propulsion vehicle) the best guide that has ever been created is called the Tahoe Benchmark Research paper A very interesting impartial test for most of this type of equipment.  The full paper can be viewed at

With the mileage claims that all these car manufactures make about their models, there is a website that gives you the real numbers of what owners are really getting.  It is called

Empirical data, you get a gas receipt and you copy your mileage and then submit it online, the site does the rest!

What I am getting at is that is there something out there that would be similar to the benchmark test for all detectors that is impartial.  I understand that a guy who has been using an Ace 250 for 20 years can do better that some newbie that just picked up an e-trac, but it would be nice to see a real benchmark test for detectors, and not sponsored by Garrett or White's or anything like that.

Is there anything out there, and if not how can someone get something like this started?

I kinda find that You-Tube is similar to looking for hard hitting journalistic data in the Enquirer or Star magazine.  You can find UFO sightings and CGI on you-tube, so I do take it with a block of salt-lick

I came across a very interesting response to a similar question:

"You really can't beat either creating an in-ground test bed and accepting its going to need a few years to settle or if you want to test out in the field at different sites make a set of test rods (based on the Mewnorton design) where you tap a rod in at a 45 degree angle, remove it and slide in the test rod that has a tip that gives the same target response as say a cent. Test rod should be marked in inches and allowing for the angle needs to be pushed in about 8 inches to get the tip to a 6 inch depth(17" to provide 12 inches depth). As the ground above remains undisturbed its a fairly good method unless you are a believer in halo effect. "

I am going to look into the Mewnorton design!

Viracocha, the next time you dig a copper coin be careful as you remove the dirt and see if you can see the green
stain on it and then just wave that lump of dirt in front of your coil and you will see if the halo effect works,
I have kept a piece of dirt just like this and a few Hot rocks to Demo the machines ground Balance speed etc,

good luck.  AU

weldone for posting those links,
