This can not be stressed enough. With the number of online classifieds growing (craigslist, ebay, treasuredepot and even here at thunting) there is a plethora of great, solid, second hand machines that can be obtained for any price range. And increasingly, there are a number of new <$100 machines that are available that will outperform any machine the beginning builder might construct. Also, coil construction esp. for the VLFs
is not easy to do. There is really no savings anymore either, as the components themselves will cost more than the inexpensive machines will be put together.
But if someone insists on building something, the link for the BFO machine above is something I heartily recommend. The coil is easy to build, all components are easy to get, and the thing
will work once you get it done. There is nothing more frustrating than building a complex project from a dubious schematic and not have it work.
I speak from experience. I wanted to build an exotic battery charger many years ago (from a magazine article no less), spent a fortune on discrete components (and a lot of time finding them), slaved over the thing, and it was dead on arrival DOA for no apparent reason on my behalf. Well three months later there was a page of errata published in that magazine that detailed a dozen different arcane things wrong with the original schematic and article! Talk about
half baked! It still has me mad to this day - where was the editor!? I never did get back to repairing the thing, as I wasn't even sure how solid the corrections were, I never found the time to get back to it, and I moved on (as I no longer had the original equipment that the charger was to work with). Well, these days they have much better charging circuits controlled by simple integrated circuits that are easy to use!
