Go Up Go Down

Hi folks, for long enough I wanted to get myself either a Tesoro or a Laser as I had always wondered about them as I had on occasion met someone with one at a club dig and nobody had a bad word to say about them and also that they sounded like they were great at weeding out small hammered silver coins and small silver Roman Denarius too.  Cool Eventually I saw a Tesoro Cibola in the small ads and it was reasonably priced so I made a swift purchase.  Cool However I've only used it just the once because on leaving the field where I tested it out on and when I had returned to my car I went to pull the headphones out of the socket and I ripped out the female jack socket right out of the control box of the Cibola  Shocked  Cry I was very surprised and I didn't feel that I could get back in touch with the seller because (a) this was some 4 or 5 weeks later  Shocked and (b) the seller might not have known anything about it and therefore not his fault  Sad so not being in a hurry because I have two other detectors I haven't done anything about repairing it in about a year since it happened, that said of course I really should go and get it repaired because it isn't doing me any favours sitting here gathering dust  Huh? . I did phone a company down in the south of England who deal in both Tesoro and Laser metal detectors but the guy on the phone quoted me £40 + parts + labour + postage too which I thought was rather a lot for a simple soldering of a new jack plug and so I never did send it to him, I did give it to my father to have a look at but when he opened it up there were more wires running everywhere and he decided that it was too much of a risk for him to get it wrong so he screwed it back up and gave me it back  Sad

Therefore I am left wondering if anyone knows how to resolder a new female jack plug back into my Tesoro Cibola ?? because I feel like I'm missing out on a whole lot of fun with this detector as it is just lying there gathering dust and instead it could be used to help me find more hammered silver and Roman silver coins  Tongue

The detector itself Tesoro Cibola  Cool

I know it's a little bit blurry, I'll blame the whisky though, lol  Embarrassed  Grin

it's little wonder my own father took one look and then closed it back up which all of these wires, it's not for the faint hearted  Huh?  Undecided

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here is the casing for the female jack plug  Huh?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st close up of the wiring to the casing  Huh?

2nd close up of the wiring to the casing  Huh?  Huh? looks a bit clearer though  Tongue

What you bought is a famale in line phone socket for stereo extension cable. You most likely need a panel mounted 5 pin DIN female like this one.

I say most likely because we need to see the male end to be sure. Count the pins and see if you can post a photo. Then you'll need to do a wire for wire replacement of the one they used. That one is a PC board mounted female connector and is not suitable as a replacement. It wasn't designed to hang in the air like that with wires soldered to it.

So, a picture of the plug on the end of the cable from the coil is the net step.

You need to buy one of this. Any electronics shop has them.

Called through whole stereo jack female socket. Cost about $2.00AU
If you have a soldering iron will be very easy to just transfer the wires PIN to PIN of the old BROCKEN to the new one.

Nickle_n, the one that is broken on his is not a stereo jack. His coil has a DIN connector.

Thanks for the replies guys  Cool  you know I don't know why I never tried to sort this before, probably because I thought it might be too technical for someone like me who knows nothing about soldering  Shocked which is surprising considering that I'm the son of a welding engineer  Shocked  Embarrassed anyway without trying to blame me old man for not teaching me these things when I was younger, lol  Smiley I really just answered my own question about the female jack plug which I bought and realised that I had bought the wrong thing  Huh? so after writing the above post  I returned to Maplin late this afternoon (electrical store here in the UK) with my control box in one hand and the Female jack plug which I photographed above in my other hand and said to them that I reckon that I had bought the wrong thing  Huh? however I didn't have the receipt but since the jack plug said their branded name (Maplin) on it would they be able to change it over and so the long and the short of it is I just got this one here which looks even better than the one that was in it in the first place  Cool

I also just by coincidence had bought a little soldering gun on eBay and it only arrived a few days ago and have yet to try it out  Smiley but it is small and simple looking but I reckon its up for the easy looking job in hand  Cool

I will post the new photos in the links below of the new jack plug which looks much better and my new soldering iron too  Cool

{alt}

{alt}

So first thing tomorrow morning I'll buy some butane gas for my new solder gun and I shall quickly do the repair and then and go out to hunt for some nice medieval hammered coins and with a little bit of luck from my virtually unused Tesoro then hopefully I will be able to put up some pictures on here too of my finds for you all to see  Tongue  Cool

2) the black one goes to the back right  Cool

3) the yellow one goes to the back left  Cool

is there something I'm missing Huh?Huh??  Huh?

I tried uploading some new photos on this thread but only one appeared  Huh? thus making me think that there must be a some rule about the amount of secondary photos allowed for the answering posts to the original thread ?? yes ?? no ?? no, yes, no ?? anyway here is a photo of the replacement one from Maplin that I got late this afternoon in a straight swap  Cool

Despite that, I happen to know the coils uses a DIN plug. It does not use a 1/4" (6mm) phone plug. If it does, then someone has replaced the original.

Like I said, the jack must be a panel mount, more like the BW79L you show in your last picture. However, the original device plug has most likely been replaced. The phone jack on the front is for the headphones and the rear is a half twist, screw on DIN which is very hard to find. They probably gave up and used whatever they had at hand.

which means that its probably happened before  Huh?  Shocked that'll explain why the guy who sold it to me phoned me about a week to 10 days later to see if everything was alright ??  Shocked maybe he broke it but then had it replaced with a similar jack socket and then tried to flog it, then I bought it and the guy had a guilty conscience  Shocked Shocked Shocked

I'll need to be really careful with it I suppose  Undecided

anybody want to buy a Cibola ?? ?? lol  Grin

As long as it works, why worry. That detector is so good you will probably pick it first among many every time. I love my Compadre and my Tiger Shark. Superb machines, Tesoro.
